Antony Loke, DAP’s Sec-Gen says no politicians will be appointed in Bursa listed GLCs such as TNB, TM, MAHB

KLANG — There are no political appointments in government-linked companies (GLCs) listed in Bursa Malaysia under the unity government, said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

Loke, who is also the transport minister, said in fact Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had informed him that he did not intend to appoint politicians to any such companies.

He clarified that most politicians appointed today did not involve GLC but were appointed to statutory bodies.

“In terms of appointment of politicians, we separate between statutory bodies and GLC. We do not agree to put politicians in GLC listed in Bursa Malaysia such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

“Those appointed now are not in such companies (GLC) but in statutory bodies, authorities and so on.

“They are regulatory bodies. Do not involve business and so on,” Bernama quoted him as saying at a press conference after officiating the Selangor DAP State Annual Convention 2023 here on Sunday (26 March).

The DAP’s Annual Convention was also attended by Pakatan Harapan (PH) Selangor chairman Amirudin Shari and Selangor DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

Loke said his ministry also retained the service of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) chairman Jamaludin Ibrahim who is a professional and will not appoint politicians to the company.

“So is MAHB. There are no political appointments in MAHB. This is clear. If in the past administration, you know who is the Prasarana chairman. Now, who is Prasana’s chairman.

“So, there are no political appointments in key GLCs such as Prasarana, MAHB, TM and so on. I am confident that the policy will continue to be maintained by YAB Prime Minister,” he said.

Loke was answering questions by reporters regarding political appointments involving PH and Umno politicians following PH’s past criticism of the matter.

Political Appointments Only For Capable Individuals

On the same note, Bernama also reported Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the unity government will not appoint any individual who is unable to contribute to the government organisation or agency they lead.

Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said that all appointments are made based on Cabinet guidelines and on the advice of the prime minister.

“Don’t view it as just because someone has a political position, especially MPs or assemblymen… their background, credentials and experience are also taken into consideration.

“This is something that has been done before, but we will not appoint any individual who cannot contribute to the organisation they lead,” Bernama quoted him as saying after an official visit to the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) in Butterworth, Penang on Sunday.

When asked about the appointment of Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman, he said it was based on the Umno secretary-general’s expertise, experience and credentials.

Zahid said Asyraf was not only a politician but a banker with expertise in Islamic banking.

“It’s a waste to have such experience and credentials, but we don’t use it to develop MARA together.

“With Asyraf’s appointment, we hope that he, together with my ministry’s staff, will be able to develop MARA,” he said.

Zahid also confirmed Parit Sulong MP Noraini Ahmad’s appointment as Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) chairman and Shaik Hussein Mydin as Perda chairman.

Political appointments in government agencies became an issue recently following a number of appointments, including Asyraf as MARA chairman, Jazlan Yaakub as Felcra chairman and Husam Musa as Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) chairman.
