KUALA LUMPUR – A 34-year-old man was arrested by the city police suspected of fire mischief that damaged 13 motorcycles and four electric scooters outside the Suria KLCC shopping centre.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Dellhan Yahaya in a statement on Friday (14 April) said the man was picked up a few hours after the fire broke out on Thursday (13 April) afternoon.

“The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which is punishable with a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and a fine.

“We have received a total of 10 reports from individuals affected by yesterday’s fire. We have not established the motive and the cause of the fire but we are still investigating,” Dellhan said adding that the man will be remanded for six days until 19 April.

Dellhan said a Honda RS motorcycle, a set of motorcycle keys, a helmet, a shirt, a pair of trousers, an arm sleeve, a bag, a watch and a lighter have been confiscated.

Meanwhile, Beam, the company whose four of their electric scooters were totally damaged is glad that their machines were not responsible for the fire.

Beam, in a statement, said it was made aware that a few of its electric scooters were damaged in the incident and relieved that no passers-by were harmed in the incident.

“We are relieved that no passers-by were harmed in the incident, and we would like to update that upon investigation by the relevant authorities, our vehicles were not the cause of the fire,” it said in a statement.

Beam said its electric scooters use aircraft-grade aluminium, the highest grade of body hardware to ensure durability, adding that the batteries within the vehicles follow international safety certification.
