HOLLYWOOD – The 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards, which took place recently, celebrated the best in film and television, with an emphasis on small-screen performances. The top prize went to the inter-dimensional adventure film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” starring Michelle Yeoh, which broke records by sweeping nearly every category and dominating the evening with four wins. “The White Lotus” was another big winner, taking home the best TV drama ensemble award, and winning the best actress in a TV drama prize for Jennifer Coolidge.

Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser earned the best actor honour for his work in “The Whale,” and Jean Smart won best actress in a TV comedy for her role in “Hacks.” The awards were also a commanding performance for A24, the indie studio behind many of the evening’s big winners.

In addition to the usual awards chatter, this year’s event had a few significant milestones. Michelle Yeoh, who won best actress for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” became the first Asian performer honoured in her category, and Ke Huy Quan, who won best supporting actor, also became the first Asian performer honoured in his category. Jason Bateman won the best actor in a TV drama award for his role in “Ozark,” and Jeremy Allen White was named best actor in a TV comedy for his performance in “The Bear.”

Despite the success of the evening, the SAG Awards took place during a tumultuous time for the entertainment industry, with leading companies pledging to tighten their belts and lay off employees in the wake of mergers, acquisitions, and the launch of streaming services. Meanwhile, unions representing screenwriters and directors are currently negotiating new contracts, with their members believing that their compensation is being negatively impacted by the new economics of streaming.

The SAG Awards themselves are far more predictive of future Oscar success than the Golden Globes, as the prizes are voted on by the 122,000 members of the leading actors union, some of whom also have membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Eight out of the last 10 lead actor victors at the SAG Awards went on to win the Oscar, and best ensemble winners have also gone on to win the best picture prize. – Variety
