Umno ministers in the federal cabinet should have pressured Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to haul up all the wrongdoers involved in the conspiracy to imprison Najib by hook or by crook, to the court of law and be served justice!

It’s time for Umno top leaders to clarify whether they really cared to exculpate their jailed former President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

A leaked internal memo of the Attorney-General chambers (AGC) recently has exposed the truth, which many Malaysians have suspected for a long time, that Najib has been politically persecuted through multiple trumped-up charges

But Umno leaders aren’t voicing out about it.

Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Law and Institutional Reform Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, and others have all gone into silent mode, soon switch off mode, on the controversial issue.

Their silence is deafening.

Umno leaders’ care less attitude suggests that they were contended with the comfort zone laid out by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

Hence, Bossku Najib has been thrown under the bus?

The Umno leaders are no longer talking about Najib, let alone exhausting ways and means to serve justice to the former prime minister.

Their apathy is pathetic.

Unlike Umno however, MCA, a long-serving partner in Barisan Nasional (BN) that Najib once headed, has issued a statement over the pressing issue.

MCA deputy chairman of international diplomacy and communications bureau, Neow Choo Seong demanded Anwar’s government to clarify the authenticity of the leaked AGC memo.

He urges the federal government to take immediate appropriate action on the controversial issue to protect the sovereignty of the law as stated in the Rukunegara.

The Memo

The leaked 12-page AGC memo specifically touched on the six charges pressed on Bossku Najib and former treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

The leaked memo can be accessed HERE.

Dated 10 September 2019, the memo was written and submitted by IPIC prosecution team head Datuk Jamil Aripin to then AG Tan Sri Tommy Thomas with a copy cc-ed to AGC’s head of prosecution Manoj Kurup.

The memo concluded that there was no case to charge Najib or Irwan Serigar and that the findings of the investigation papers didn’t fulfil the minimum requirement or threshold to press charges against both men.

The memo has claimed that the weak charges cannot stand in the court to secure even a prima facie case, let alone a conviction, against Najib and Irwan Serigar.

According to the memo, all the statements of the 138 witnesses, including high-ranking Finance Ministry (MoF) officers, interviewed by the AGC and documented evidence failed to support the prosecution case.

The memo has strongly suggested to Tommy Thomas that cases related to 1MDB-IPIC against Najib and Serigar should be dropped.

On Monday (21 Aug), Tommy Thomas claimed that he can’t recall such a memo.

Maybe he is suffering from selective amnesia.

The current AG Tan Sri Idrus Harun has said that AGC was conducting an internal probe to find out the source of the leak.

In other words, Idrus has implied that the leaked memo actually existed and was authentic.

Rule of Law

In his statement released on Monday, 21 August, Neow stressed that “justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done”, recalling the famous 1924 dictum of the late England Chief Justice, Lord Gordon Hewart.

That’s the fundamental principle of the rule of law.

The MCA leader pointedly noted that it was imperative for Anwar’s government to bring clarity on the major public interest issue as it involved Malaysia’s diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia dan United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The UAE government owns the IPIC, International Petroleum Investment Company, while the Malaysian government owns 1MDB, the IMalaysia Investment Board.

“Not only Najib Razak and his family, but the whole international community, especially those in the legal profession are watching what’s happening in this country,” noted Neow.

Reminder

Neow’s sharp and direct statement is a timely reminder to Anwar’s government, which has so far shirked its constitutional responsibility to mete out justice on the legal wrongs and sins inflicted on Najib.

Anwar himself once claimed he was a victim of injustice.

When he was the opposition icon, the PKR president always paraded himself as a crusader for justice.

But today, after becoming Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PM10 /PMX), he remains hypocritically unfazed by the injustice and illegal imprisonment exacted on Najib.

PM10 had even issued statements seemingly to defend certain alleged anti-Najib conspirators such as Judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali and Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry of former AG Tommy Thomas, announced in January, is yet to commence.

Political Pressure

Umno ministers in the federal cabinet should have piled on the political pressure on PMX to haul up all the wrongdoers involved in the conspiracy to imprison Najib by hook or by crook, to the court of law and be served the deserved justice.

But Umno leaders are embarrassingly mute, perhaps protecting their own selfish political interests in Putrajaya’s comfort zone.

Thus, the self-proclaimed crusader of justice, PM10 has conveniently sidestepped the issue.

Zahid once told Najib’s supporters that Umno was doing everything possible to secure Bossku’s release from the illegal confinement in Kajang Prison.

But Zahid doesn’t realise that action speaks louder than words.

He and his team are working behind the scene to secure Bossku’s freedom? Maybe.

But Zahid should remember that “actions must not only be done, but must also be seen to be done”. – Mediahit
